Hello, welcome and happy new year!
You might have noticed a bit of a change around here. You might be new. In any case, let me introduce myself (or re-introduce, as the case may be).
My name’s Ada, and I’m a 32 year old Glasgow mama, living with my partner Ally and our two year old son, Lucas. I’ve been around the blogosphere since 2009- when I blogged about film for my degree course- and most recently, used to blog under the name Ada Lovelace x. It was an old nickname, that found its way into my social media handles, and was an easy pick for a blog name. When I went self-hosted I’d just had a baby and didn’t give it much thought, but it never really felt right.
When your blog name doesn’t fit, it can be hard to feel enthusiastic about it. It feels like it throws everything else off, and it didn’t represent what I wanted the blog to be. But then, I didn’t really know what I wanted it to be, so I was kind of stuck again. Last year I published maybe five blog posts so, when my old host’s eye-watering renewal price came in, I decided it was time for a new chapter.
So here it is!
After moving to a new host (thank you, the lovely people at Lyrical Host), I thought about what I wanted from my blog. I thought about the ways in which I wanted to improve. Top of the list were content, consistency and photography. My old blog wasn’t exactly super creative with its content or imagery. There were pieces that I was proud of writing, but none of it flowed together. It felt like it juddered uncomfortably together and didn’t feel like a creative endeavour.
I always felt that a need to create, to nourish your imagination, to be your most productive self in whatever way, is something that you feel through to your bones. Every impulse tells you do grab your tools and get going and you act on it, whether it’s writing, drawing, painting, baking, reading, I dunno, even sewing a goddamn button back on a coat. That’s how you knew it was what you needed to do. Also, I like art and making it in whatever way. And behold- The Artful Bones was born.
It’s taken a few tweaks but I’m finally happy with what I’ve got in store. The nicest knock-on effect from setting up my new blog was that I was actually excited about it. After migrating my old blog, taking some time to make it pretty, setting up a new Instagram (hint, hint!), getting to grips with image making and editing apps- I couldn’t wait to get writing again.
That hasn’t happened in a long time. And let me tell you, it felt good to feel good about something.
In the interests of starting afresh, I’ve archived all of my pre-2018 posts- think of them as a “previously on”. They’re not the most reflective of what I like to write about, though. Head on over to my About Me page for a bit more of a flavour of what to expect.
That was a longer introduction than I intended, but that’s pretty much standard for me! If you’ve made it here, thanks for stopping by. I hope you’ll stick around- there’s a lot I want to do with The Artful Bones. I’ve got a good feeling about this one.
